Spokane Festival Captures Sounds of Middle-earth August 13-15

Middle-earth is about to drop in on eastern Washington state as residents of Spokane gear up for the 6th annual Tolkien Moot. According to this news article the convention is scheduled for the weekend of August 13-15. Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and Middle-earth around the world will be able to watch the convention live on the Internet.

Which is a good thing for people who love Elvish music. Elvish singer Rehtaeh (known in mundane life as Heather Downing from Kansas City) is performing live at the Moot all three days of the weekend. Her performances are open to the public.

Tolkien Moot brings together scholars and experts in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and role-playing gamers who have a particular affinity for adventuring in Tolkien’s imagination. Past guests include John D. Rateliff, Professor Chris Seeman, Dr. Thomas Morwinsky, and Michael Martinez. Martinez, who will be guesting at the convention again this year, has published three books on Middle-earth. He is the cohost of Middle-earth Talk Radio along with convention organizer Hawke Robinson. The pair will do a livecast of their show at the end of the convention.

Heather Downing has released three CDs as Rehtaeh. Her latest album, “ElementAria”, is available for purchase or download from Amazon.com, iTunes, Napster, and other popular music etailing sites.

Five Motives to Go and Check out Chicago: the Musical

For those of us caught up in the often stress filled, dull-at-best modern-day, nothing can spark more enthusiasm than a journey back to the past?particularly when that past is set in the roaring 20?s, the age of prohibition in which unabashed debauchery and reckless nihilism soared to new heights. Chicago: The Musical is just such a blast from the past, presenting boundless drama that takes place from the very first act. The entertainment value of the story alone is rationale enough to check out this performance, but for those who want extra reason, here are five motives to go watch Chicago: The Musical. 1. The Music Sure to keep you interested, each musical number in Chicago is modeled on a traditional vaudeville act; most of them are also inspired by specific famous vaudeville performers, for instance Judy Garland and Mae West. The score was composed by John Kander, winner of the Tony, Laurence Olivier, Emmy, and Grammy Awards. Songs include ‘All that Jazz’ as well as ‘Razzle Dazzle’ 2. The Awards Chicago: The Musical itself has been the winner of a number of awards, which includes eleven Tony nominations in the 1976 original run of the show and a Tony in 1997, the Drama Desk Awards, Outer circle Awards, and Drama League Award. An Academy Award-winning film version of the musical was released to much critical acclaim in 2002. 3. The Choreography The musical Chicago has become associated with its choreography, designed by praised choreographer Bob Fosse, who himself has picked up eight Tony Awards for his occupation. Of particular interest here are the numbers ?Razzle Dazzle,? ?Cell Block Tango,? along with ?We Both Reached for the Gun.? 4. The Staging The sets, style, dance numbers, and utter visual spectacle for this theatre show are unequalled and the show often smashes the fourth wall, attracting the audience directly into its visceral world. 5. The Concept If practically nothing about theatre shows interests you, then the intellectual fodder set out by the themes in the tale of Chicago: The Musical is ample to get anyone?s mind operating. Chicago isn?t shy about mentioning how glamorized bad guys become once they enter the public eye, nor does it abstain from the central theme that people everywhere are absolutely in love with scandal, no matter how depraved. Flamenco Dancing

Flamenco dancing emanated in a neighborhood called Andalusia in Spain. This type of dancing is native to the Andalusian people. It is also inspired by other cultures such as Sephardic, Moorish, and Byzantine. The affects of the different cultures in the flamenco dance transpired during the 1400 A.D.

The label flamenco was not mentioned in any archaeological source until the 18th century. Flamenco dancers are well known among the gypsies in Andalusia. The gypsies that lived in Andalusia are also known as the Gitanos. The natives that live with the gypsies are also familiar with this dance. The contribution to the advancement of the flamenco dance happens in Extremadura and Murcia. This genre of dance also mixes with other influences from cultures that belong to countries outside Andalusia such as Cuba. Many musical dances and techniques are derived from the Jewish and Moorish societies.

The golden age of flamenco took place in between 1869 - 1910. During this period, this form of dance was performed at the cafes. People who want to watch the flamenco dance have to pay for the admission tickets. Later, more and more cafes that offer the flamenco dance show are opened.

While performing this dance, the women wear different kinds of dresses. The costumes are regularly black or red in color. Some women also wear white and navy blue dresses. The dresses are designed with many ruffles and high heel shoes. The men will wear tuxedo and streach pants during the flamenco performance.

This type of dancing is not accompanied by musical instruments. Instead, the people would sing and clap the hands. In this type of dancing, the dancer performs the dancing steps based on his or her emotions. The dancers may possibly shake their body or kick their feet high to show their emotions. Every so often, the dancer may lose control of their emotions through this dancing. Even so, the flamenco dancing is at all times done with grace and precision.

Travel Deals for the Retired

The whole point to retiring is to be able to do what you want. And what most people want to do when they’re retired is to travel. Traveling as a retired person or a senior citizen can be a lot more affordable than it was when you were young and working for a living. For one thing, retired people can join AARP and get travel deals. Here are 3 ways retired people can find better travel deals.

1. Join AARP. The AARP is the American Association for Retired Persons, and membership with their organization entitles you to travel discounts which aren’t available to the general public. Car rentals are one of the most popular categories of product which offer significant discounts to AARP members. You can learn more about getting the best car rental rates here: How To Get the Best AARP Car Rental Rate. But AARP members also sometimes get discounts on meals, hotel stays, and airfare, so be sure to doublecheck to see what kind of discount you’re eligible for.

2. Shop around. Comparison shopping is a key element in any money-saving strategy. It’s not enough to just call Hotels.com or the Holiday Inn and book whatever they say is the best rate. Call multiple companies and get rates on your travel items from each of them. Be sure to talk to a person, and always ask for a better rate than the first rate they offer you.

3. Always ask for the senior citizen discount. Senior citizen discounts can vary in amount from 0% to 10% or more, but you’ll never know if you don’t mention it. Always ask for a senior citizen discount. There’s no reason to be embarrassed by this. You’ve worked hard all your life for the privilege of being retired, and getting your due is well worth it. Getting the same products for 10% less is like having an extra 10% to spend. If you’re living on a retirement income of $25,000 a year, and I offered you $2500 a year just for asking for a senior discount every time you buy something, you wouldn’t hesitate, would you?

Retired people deserve to get the best travel deals. And getting those deals is easy to do, IF you go into it with the right attitude and a plan for how you’re going to save the most money when purchasing travel.
