That’s why I’ve discarded my fancy speech. I’ve trashed my start-to-finish, logical formal address. In it’s place, I tell one amusing story after another.

There’s just one catch: All the stories must relate to my major theme. But the funnier I am - and I’m funny about half the time - the better feedback I get.

Here are five simple joke ideas, plus ways you might drag them into your next speech:

1. PLAY-ON-WORDS - Example: “Let me be frank with you. That may be difficult, because Frank is not my name.”

2. NON-SEQUITIR - Example: “All of us notice more insects this summer. Some of them have two wings, and others have four. Wingless insects like ants don’t fly. They carpool.”

3. EXAGGERATION - Example: “No one knows how many insects invade us, because many live underground, and some fall beneath shoes. But the last approximate count was 347 gazillion.”

4. COMPARATIVE - Example: “It was so hot today I decided to wear this really cool coat.”

5. SET UP, PUNCH LINE - Example; “I had a great lunch before I came over here. I went to a fish restaurant, and asked the cook ‘Can you make a catfish?’ He said ‘I guess I could give him a rod and reel, but I’m not sure he could use it.’”

How To Cut the Clutter and Win Readers

Most of us hate housework.

Nevertheless, even the most hopeless slobs amongst us would agree that we love having a clean, organised house. It looks more inviting. It’s easy to find what you want, when you want it. If only it didn’t take so much time to get it that way!

If you’re lucky enough to have a cleaner, then you’ve solved the problem. It’s someone else’s job to clean up and get rid of the dust and the mess. Most of us don’t have that luxury. If we want a clean and clutter-free environment, we have to work to get it that way.

It’s exactly the same when it comes to writing. If you want a fresh, clutter-free piece of text - you have to clean it up yourself. Readers don’t like to be surrounded by clutter any more than you do.

What Is “Clutter”?

“Clutter” in writing may be described as anything that clogs up the channel between the writer’s imagination and the reader’s experience. If you have a hard time identifying what is clutter and what isn’t, use these points to guide you.

  1. Be guided by the viewpoint character’s thoughts, emotions and reactions. Climb inside the skin of the viewpoint character. What does he/she feel? Think? Decide? When something happens, what would this character’s logical reaction be?

  2. If something is not noticed by the viewpoint character, or is not important, don’t put it in.

  3. Don’t over-explain. Remember that we all come to any novel with a host of experiences behind us. Readers and authors share many common experiences. For example: mention the word ‘vomit’ and that is quite enough for most readers to fill in the gaps. They don’t need you to go into detail about the smell, texture, colour and so on.

  4. Avoid the temptation to personify inanimate objects. If you attribute human characteristics or emotions to anything from a mailbox to a rock, it (a) distracts the reader, focusing his/her attention on something that is not important and (b) reduces the impact of the human character’s emotions. (In a fantasy novel, of course, you may have all sorts of strange objects or creatures that take on human characteristics.)

  5. Avoid repetition. This means repeated words or phrases (often repeated because the writer is too lazy to find an alternative) and repeated ideas. You don’t need to explain the same thing three different ways.

  6. Avoid words that will be unfamiliar to most readers. Don’t take the high road and decide that it’s your job to improve your readers’ vocabularies. Most of them won’t thank you for it. They don’t want to put down the book and go find a dictionary. One unfamiliar word isn’t a problem; a book full of them annoys the reader intensely. Do you want to annoy your readers? I hope not.

An Example Of A Scene Filled With Clutter

Gasping for air, Marcy raced through the dark green forest, not daring to look behind her in her state of raw panic. Tripping on a protruding root she half-fell, but recovered quickly and maintained her reckless headlong course through the knotted vines and lashing branches that were taking evil swipes at her as she ran. She had to get away from her pursuers.

“Ouch!” she yelped as yet another branch attacked her, the ‘thwack’ of its savage assault echoing through the half-light. Almost falling again she managed to recover, grabbing on to a handy nearby swinging vine to save herself. Wishing she had never set out on this trip, she decided to stop to catch her breath. Taking the opportunity to look around, she suddenly saw a strange plant, its leaves an odd mottled purple that was at odds with all the greenery that surrounded it on every side. What a strange plant, she thought.

Going over to take a closer look, she was intrigued by the way the plant seemed to be in a space of its own. No other plants grew close in the dim light of the forest; this one was entirely by itself.

What’s Wrong With The Above Scene?

Plenty! I’m amazed you’ve persevered this far. (It made me nauseous just having to write it.) Okay, I’ve exaggerated the problems in the above excerpt somewhat to make my point - but I’ve seen worse. Much worse, actually.

Here are some of the problems in the scene I created:

  1. Over-explaining; repetition. We are shown that Marcy is in a state of panic by the way she’s racing through the forest ‘not daring to look behind her’. It’s not necessary to add ‘in her state of raw panic’ or even ‘her reckless headlong course’. Ditto for the words ’strange’ and ‘plant’ - look for the instances of repetition. The fact that a vine is ‘handy’ implies that it is nearby, and it’s in the nature of vines to swing - so we don’t need the words ‘nearby’ or ’swinging’.

  2. Trees are just trees; vines are just vines. Marcy is getting caught up in them because she’s running blindly to get away from her pursuer(s). Unless she’s in some kind of enchanted forest, the trees could not be taking ‘evil’ swipes, and they are not ‘attacking’ her in some ’savage assault’. The writer should be showing Marcy’s fear through her thoughts and reactions, rather than attempting to generate suspense through giving the trees human attributes.

  3. Marcy’s main aim is to escape her pursuers. Put yourself in Marcy’s place. If you were running from someone or something, what would be your main concern? (a) to get away and (b) to make sure they were nowhere close if you had to stop. If you had to stop to catch your breath, is it likely you would suddenly forget your pursuers to look more closely at a strange plant? Of course not. You’d listen for sounds of pursuit and decide whether you needed to keep going or hide.

  4. Make sure your characters act logically. Anything else is clutter. (In this case, if the strange plant is important to the plot, think of a more convincing way to bring it into the story rather than plonking it right in Marcy’s path and having her ’suddenly’ notice it.)

  5. Avoid long sentences with lots of detail when you are trying to create the impression of haste and fear. For example: “Tripping on a protruding root she half-fell, but recovered quickly, maintaining her reckless headlong course through the knotted vines and lashing branches that were taking evil swipes at her as she ran.” Do we feel Marcy’s terror? Can we feel the burning of her lungs as she runs, gasping for air? Can we feel the pain as she falls? No, no and no. The writer is telling, not showing. In this sentence, the main character seems somewhat removed from what is happening to her. We’re reading about her rather than looking through her eyes.

  6. There’s an over-reliance on the ‘…ing’ construction. This is one of the main culprits in making a passage of text slow-paced and repetitive. In the example above we have sentences starting with “gasping”; “tripping”; “wishing” and “taking” - not to mention the other “ing” words that pepper the text: “protruding”, “maintaining”, “lashing”, “echoing”, “falling”, “taking”, and “swinging”. Check all your work to make sure you’re not showing symptoms of the “ing” disease!

These are just a few of the things that can clutter your writing and make it hard for the reader to struggle through. Cut the clutter - and keep your readers turning pages.

ELICIT, ILLICIT

Elicit means to extract or draw out; illicit means not legal.

EVERYONE, EVERY ONE

Everyone means every person in a group; every one means each person and is always followed by “of”.

“Everyone needs to know how to swim.”

“Every one of you should be able to swim.”

FAIR, FARE

Fair means average, good-looking, pale, unbiased (what a lot of meanings for one little word!); fare is the money you pay to go somewhere by bus, train, plane, taxi, etc. It can also refer to a passenger. As a verb it means do, as in:

“I didn’t fare as well in my exams this year as I’d hoped.”

FAZE, PHASE

The most common error is the use of phase when the writer means faze. To faze someone is to fluster or confuse them, whereas phase is mostly used in reference to a stage in someone’s life–though it can be a stage in almost anything else:

“Like most children, Danny’s going through a phase of refusing to eat his vegetables.”

“Nothing fazes my mother, who can produce a meal for unexpected guests at a moment’s notice.”

FOREWORD, FORWARD

Foreword is the preface in a book, usually written by someone who is not the author; forward means ahead, near the front.

FORTH, FOURTH

Forth means forward; fourth is after “third”.

FOUL, FOWL

Foul can mean dishonourable (by foul means), disgusting (a foul smell), entangle (rubbish dumped in the river can foul fishing lines); fowl is a bird.

GORILLA, GUERRILLA

Gorilla is a large ape; guerrilla is a particular kind of soldier.

HANGED, HUNG

A criminal is always hanged; a picture is hung:

“We hung the portrait where everybody could see it.”

“John Smith was hanged yesterday at dawn.”

Just remember, “I’ll be hanged if they’re going to hang me,” and you won’t forget the difference again!

HERD, HEARD

Herd is a group of animals; heard is the past tense of hear.

HERE, HEAR

Here refers to a location (as in “over here”). Hear is always what your ears do. I can’t see why writers should get confused here, but they must do because I have seen this more than once. (And, no, that’s not a sample sentence!)

IRREGARDLESS, REGARDLESS

There is no such word as irregardless; the correct word is regardless.

HOLE, WHOLE

Hole is an opening; whole means complete.

ITS, IT’S

This is confusing because possessives normally have an apostrophe, but in this case it’s is short for it is and its is possessive–always.

“Its colour is green and it’s quite beautiful.”

Other possessives that don’t have an apostrophe are theirs, hers, yours and his–though I doubt anyone is likely to try putting one in his!

The Arrogant Writer: Five Ways To Nurture and Defend Your Muse

Arrogance has a bad rap. We think of arrogant people as unpleasant to be around, full of themselves, and incapable of taking an interest in anyone else. However, when applied to one’s own writing, a certain measure of well-placed arrogance can be a useful tool.

Writing can be a scary enterprise. The writer puts herself out for public scrutiny in a way most other artists and professionals do not. When the writer publishes, she commits herself to the words she’s written for the rest of her life. Even if she changes her mind about what she’s said, others may still react to the piece decades after it first appears in print. This can make even the act of putting pen to paper (or more likely, fingers to keyboard) an anxiety-producing ordeal.

Then there is the schooling most of us received, which treated writing as a chore rewarded when well done or punished when poorly done, as opposed to a pleasurable activity for ourselves and our readers. Very few of us had any audience for any the writing we did in classrooms, other than the teachers who instructed, criticized and graded us. It’s no wonder most writers suffer from self-doubt rather than overconfidence. We tend to underestimate ourselves and our words, even when they come from the most powerful places inside us, even when we get accolades from the outside world, and even long after we finally get published.

Practicing selective arrogance can help disarm these nasty doubts. And, not to worry: If you are not arrogant to begin with, practicing the type of arrogance I suggest will not transform you into an insufferable braggart. Rather, it will help uplift you from the gutters of self-doubt onto the clean, dry road to getting published. Even if you do not feel in the least arrogant about your writing, you can still follow my simple instructions to act as if you do, with the same results: to get published, or to get published again.

Selective arrogance does not mean thinking of yourself as any better than anyone else, or as having reached the pinnacle of your skills. Rather, it means treating every word you write as a precious baby worthy of the greatest care and nurturance. Here’s how to do that:

Never, ever throw anything away, period.

Carry with you at all times a means to record your creative thoughts.

Record your creative bursts, even if other voices inside you are dismissing them with negative judgments.

Trust your impulses and passions: if you feel drawn to write about something, write about it!

Eschew impatience-give your babies the time they need to gestate.

If you’ve read between the lines, you see that these instructions have you do nothing more than treat yourself and your writing with respect. However, because many people have a hard time doing even that, I counsel my clients to behave arrogantly. It gets them giggling and releasing the feelings they have about their writing, and makes it easier to find that respect.

Although you may have read elsewhere to be prepared to throw away your first writing attempts, to release attachment to your early work and the like, nuggets of wisdom and creativity appear throughout a writer’s life from childhood through seniority. I advocate collecting and these and treating them with care, perhaps polishing them now and again. There is no magical moment when one suddenly becomes “a good writer.” Thus, your most novice scribblings become diamond mines.

The one time I disobeyed my own advice and discarded what was I believed was possibly the most poorly written sentence in history (or at least my own history), I rejoiced. Five minutes later, I needed the gem in a new sentence, and struggled to reconstruct the one I’d discarded. May you never make that mistake-do as I say, not as I’ve done.

These gems also shine through at unexpected times. This is why I advise my clients to carry at least some scrap paper and a pencil nub if not an electronic recording device. The times at night and in the mornings between wake and sleep often yield good raw material, so keep your recording device of choice bedside.

The idea behind saving every little scrap, writing everything down and cultivating the arrogance to believe these activities matter is that finished pieces often assert themselves over time, forming a coherent whole from little scraps, like a Rorschach, or getting that crucial letter right in the Wheel of Fortune. The key is to keep feeding the collage and trusting that something or things will emerge over time.

Not every sentence will necessarily lead to an essay, book or screenplay of its own. But some might add that missing piece to make a good piece great. Even tidbits that go nowhere for now still give your brain a chance to exercise itself and keep your creative pathways well-hacked.

When it comes to choosing which pathway you’ll write your way down, trust your wild and wooly impulses. If you’re drawn to something, chances are you will make the subject come alive. You’ll seduce your readers by the very fact of your relationship to the material.

Finally, give your pieces the time they need to develop. Being an arrogant writer means honoring the gestation period your writings must pass through to be born into the world healthy and ready to engage readers. Honoring this gestation period may mean asking for help. Just as the dedicated gardener finds the right soil, fertilizer, seeds, watering schedule and equipment, so the arrogant writer finds her coach, buddy, copyeditor, ghostwriter, or colleague’s expert eye. I have seen writers move from stagnation to publication with the right combination of assistance. I love being part of that process.
