Over the past few months, technology giants Amazon, Google and Microsoft have all started launching their respective data centers. While these companies have been mum about their plans, the move of creating managed hosting data centers was sensible considering that investing in web based services is the trend today.

But what is more surprising is the news that Apple is also about to join the ranks of those who have established data centers although the company is about to break ground on a bigger one.

Apple’s data center is located in the western part of North Carolina, about 40m from the west of Charlotte. It is said to span over 200 acres of property and was constructed as the company’s IT hub in the east coast. (The hub in the west coast is in Newark, California). Construction started around mid-August and the center is reportedly going to employ fifty technicians on a full-time basis.

The site plans indicated that the company is building a data center space to be housed in a single building. This will make it one of the biggest data centers in the world. There are only three data centers that have been created on this scale: Microsoft’s Chicago data center, the one owned by Phoenix ONE and another by SuperNAP. All three have used more than 400,000 sq ft of space for their data centers.

So what does Apple really have in store for this data center? Experts believe that this is more than just for the growth of its online services. Something bigger is on the horizon. Expansion of web-based software suites, creation of new products and online document storage may be what’s driving the construction.
