Dropout Becomes Technology Mogul

Bill Gates, or William Henry Gates III on his birth document, was a wizard during his early academic years. He was naturally adept in math and science. Coming from a prominent Seattle family, his father a famous lawyer, his grand father an influential banker, and his great-grandfather a former statesman and mayor, it was expected that he would reach greater heights in his life.

Born on October 28, 1955, Gates’ first encounter with a computer was in the spring of 1968, when his school purchased a computer from General Electric in order to acquaint the children with the evolving technology. Gates, Paul Allen, and several students (most of whom became Microsoft’s first programmers) were immediately hooked.

In the fall of the same year, Computer Center Corporation opened for business in Seattle. It was here that Gates and Allen honed their computing skills. They were even banned from the establishment for several weeks after hacking the company’s computer system. The owner, however, was so impressed with their hacking skills that the company hired them to expose the weaknesses and consequently bolster the security codes of the system. Two years later however, the company closed down.

Upon entering college in 1973, Gates decided to pursue law at Harvard but was drawn again to the world of computers when he located the school’s computer center. A year later, a reunion with Allen marked a crucial point in their lives. Gates called MITS, makers of Altair computers, and told them about a fictitious software he and Allen made, further saying that it was compatible with Altair’s programs. After sealing an agreement, both men worked to make the non-existing software a reality. Eight weeks later, Allen made a demonstration to MITS. MITS acquired the rights to the software. Gates then dropped out of Harvard. In the span of a single year, Microsoft was born.
